Canadian Yellow Split Pea Soup with Ham

"Creamy yellow pea soup studded with bits of ham, carrots, celery, and thyme. There is not anything like this one on a cold day! I am a Canadian now living in the US. And cannot get Habitant® soup anymore, so I got here up with this version. I think it is as right as the real component, if not better, due to the fact it's miles selfmade."

Ingredients :

  • 2 half cups yellow break up peas
  • 1 ham bone with some meat
  • 4 carrots, diced
  • 1/2 massive Spanish onion, diced
  • 5 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 pinch floor black pepper, or to taste
  • eight cups water, or as wanted

Instructions :

Prep : 20M Cook : 12M Ready in : 3H50M
  • Place cut up peas, ham bone, carrots, onion, celery, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper right into a large pot; pour in water. Bring aggregate to a boil and read off any foam with a spoon. Reduce warmth; region a lid at the pot barely ajar to permit a few evaporation. Simmer, stirring occasionally, till peas are soft and soup is thick, about 3 hours.
  • Remove ham bone from soup; strip meat from ham bone, chop meat, and go back it to the pot.

Notes :

  • You can substitute 2 smoked beef hocks or 1 small ham shank for the leftover ham bone.
  • Adjust thickness of soup via adding a little water to skinny or eliminate broth with a spoon for a thicker soup.
  • I once in a while use an immersion blender for a quick 2nd to mixture the soup, ensuring to go away a few chunky peas, carrots, celery, and ham.
  • Reynolds® Aluminum foil may be used to keep meals moist, prepare dinner it evenly, and make easy-up less difficult.
